Jesus Freaks Or CCM Hippie Freaks
By David J. Stewart
“Jesus Freak” is a Hippie Term!
In Elton John's song, “Tiny Dancer,” he makes the following derogatory statement towards Christians...
"Jesus freaks, out in the street, handing tickets out to God..."
The “tickets” which Elton John mentions are Gospel tracts. It does not come as a surprise to me that an unrepentant homosexual, who is legally married to another man, a freak of nature himself, would refer to Christians as “Jesus freaks”; BUT, it is sad that some professed believers today are foolishly identifying themselves as such. Elton John calls Christians “freaks.” They Still Hate Jesus (by Pastor Danny Castle; exposing Hollywood's satanic hatred for Jesus). The term “Jesus freaks” has recently been used frequently by reprobates Howard Stern and Ted Turner to mock genuine Christians. God-fearing Christians, if they're living right, by far are not the freaks.
Please understand that I don't condemn anyone, for the Bible condemns all of us as guilty, dirty, rotten, hell-deserving sinners. My salvation solely rests in God righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ, because of the precious blood that He gave for my sins. My intention is not to be unkind to anyone in the article; but rather, to expose worldly music and attitudes in churches today.
The phrase Jesus freak was originally a derogatory term applied to those involved in the Jesus movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The term came into existence within the context of the freak scene of that era. The Jesus movement was the major so-called Christian element within the hippie counterculture, or, conversely, the major hippie element within the Body of Christ. The worship services in the Jesus movement paved the way for the development of modern worship music, i.e., Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). Some professed believers today foolishly call themselves "Jesus freaks," not realizing that they are associating themselves with the rebellious, pot-smoking, fornicating, drug-crazed, child-murdering hippie culture. Jesus freak is a derogatory term that began with the hippie movement of the 1960's and should never be used by any believer today!
DC Talk's 1995 album cover, Jesus Freak, and their lead singer, tobyMac
It should be clearly obvious to you that the character of Jesus Christ is not what is freakish about Toby McKeehan (tobyMac's real name). TobyMac looks like a street punk. I'm not saying that he is a punk, but he looks like one. He is freakish in a bad sense.
In the following sermon quote, Pastor Jack Hyles points out that the way in which we talk, dress and behave sends a clear message to others about who we are. We do all judge from the outside...
I Was in Wichita, Kansas. I was about to preach, and I went out to check my book table and a couple fellows walked through. I said to the man beside me, "Look, tell the man to sing another song, I want to go talk to those hippies." Two hippies came through and I said, "Hey fellows, I want to talk to you. My name is Jack Hyles." One of them said, "Hi, my name is So and So." We talked for awhile, and I said, "Are you fellows Christians?" One of the hippies said, "Praise the Lord!" I thought, "Good night! I never had a hippie speak like that hippie" I said, "You mean you are saved?" He said, "I am born again." He pulled his Bible out and said, "I love the Bible. I am born again." He was one of these Jesus freaks. I said, "That is tremendous, and I rejoice in it." I said, "Do you know what I thought you were?" He said, "What?" "I thought you were a hippie." He said, "How would you think that?" I said, "Well it may be the sandals. It may be the dirty teeth. It may be the blue jeans with patches. It may be the shirt with the hand-painted pictures all over it. It may be the long hair, it may be the beard." He said, "That is the trouble with you Fundamentalists: You are always judging from the outside." I said, "What did you call me?" He said, "A Fundamentalist." I said, "How did you know?" He said, "I could tell by looking at you." I said, "That is the trouble with you Jesus freaks: You are always judging from the outside."

How does tobyMac's worldly appearance measure up to James 4:4... “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” Mr. McKeehan is God's enemy. If you don't believe it, then please read the following information if you dare...
“Jesus Freak”? — DC Talk is of the Devil
DC Talk's video "Jesus Freak" is one of the most popular Christian video's ever recorded...
But, how “Christian” is it? “Jesus Freak” was directed by an Englishman named Simon Maxwell. And who is Simon Maxwell? Simon Maxwell is video director for the Satanic and blasphemous Nine Inch Nails!
DC Talk openly admits to watching one of Nine Inch Nails' videos, and liked Maxwell's style. “We had seen some of Simon's work with Nine Inch Nails,” says DC Talk vocalist Toby McKeehan. “HIS STYLE APPEALED TO US.” (Billboard, November 11, 1995)
Have you seen the “ultra-blasphemous” video “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails? It shows a monkey crucified on a cross!
Here's a clip from Nine Inch Nails video “Closer”!
DC Talk openly admits to watching this kind of blasphemy!
“If you think I WORSHIP SATAN because of something you see in the 'Closer' video [with its images of a crucified monkey] — great!” (Trent Reznor, People, Feb. 6, 1995)You talk about wicked Satanic, blasphemy! And DC Talk proudly admits to watching Nine Inch Nails videos and liked them so much they hired Simon Maxwell to direct and produce their "Jesus Freak" video!
And believe me there's NOTHING CHRISTIAN about the video! Even Billboard magazine says of the video, "The clip's slick style and in-your-face imagery could easily fit between cutting edge video's from the likes of Nirvana to Nine Inch Nails. . ." (Billboard, Nov 11, 1995)
Simon Maxwell says the process of creating the DC Talk clip wasn't MUCH DIFFERENT from what he did on the Nine Inch Nails video. (Billboard, Nov 11, 1995)
Nine Inch Nails, lead by Trent Reznor, who even Spin magazine calls the "Evil One" (Spin, April 1997). Trent Reznor is personally responsible for the "huge-mainstream" success of the "perverted-blasphemous-Satanist" Marilyn Manson. Manson, a member of the Church of Satan, says in Spin, Aug. 96 (p.34), "Hopefully, I'll be remembered as the who brought an end to Christianity." Manson's latest album is "AntiChrist Superstar".
In the understatement of the year, Toby McKeehan told Billboard magazine, ". . . the intention of the clip was to "push the envelope" of the Christian music community. . . they expect some of the more CONSERVATIVE members of the Christian community to FROWN on the adventurous clip." (Billboard, Nov 11, 1995)
God help us! God help us, that we as Christians let groups like dc Talk hide behind a "Christian" label and "pervert" our Christian young people!
A reporter for the San Diego North Country Reader, (February 29, 1996) covering a dc Talk "Freak Show" concert made these not-surprisingly, but sad words of testimony from some young people, ". . . we both laughed during the buildup for the encore of "Purple Haze/Jesus Freak" as several young booty shakers cried, almost in unison, 'These guys are the s*@!, man.'"
There is a CLEAR "testimony" of the "fruit" of dc Talk! Young people listening to them and spewing PROFANITY!
The words of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:16-10, ring "loud and true"!
"Ye shall know them by their FRUITS. . . every good tree bringeth forth good FRUIT; but a CORRUPT tree bringeth forth EVIL fruit. . . Wherefore by their FRUITS ye shall KNOW them."
Matthew 7:16-20
Christian parents and youth ministers are naively sending their children to DC Talk concerts thinking they're providing a "Christian" alternative to the world. Tragically, DC Talk (and other demonic "Christian" Rock stars) are "spiritually" feeding their young people with Satanic poison!
And even worse—in the name of Jesus!
Young person, parent, pastor, youth minister — whoever you are reading this — are you so "spiritually" blind you can't see this!
Or are you so "filled" with rock music — you just don't care!
Wake up pastor!
Wake up
parents!
Quit sacrificing your children like "innocent lambs to the slaughter" to these C-rock "stars" "which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves!" (Matthew 7:15)
The Sick Truth About DC Talk
Some of DC TALK’S musical role models are the Beatles, David Bowie, and The Police, all of which are wicked secular rock groups. dc Talk’s album “Free at Last” contains a song titled “Jesus Is Just Alright,” which was first sung by the Byrds (the song was later covered by the Doobie Brothers; a “doobie” is a marijuana joint). DC Talk’s Kevin Smith admits that he listens to mostly secular rock music (Flint Michigan Journal, March 15, 1996, B19). dc Talk opened its “Jesus Freak” concerts with the Beatles’ song “Help.” They also perform Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze. Hendrix was a drug-crazed New Age occultist.
Toward the end of their concerts dc Talk plays the rock song “All Apologies” by the wicked secular rock group Nirvana, formerly led by Kurt Cobain. Terry Watkins notes: “Kurt Cobain is one of the worst Antichrist, blasphemers since John Lennon. Kurt Cobain decorated his home with blood-splattered baby dolls hanging by their necks! The inside of Nirvana’s album In Utero, which is the album dc Talk got ‘All Apologies’ from, has pictures of chopped up babies! Cobain ran around his neighborhood spray-painting, ‘ABORT CHRIST’ and ‘GOD IS GAY.’ Cobain’s first band was called ‘Fecal Matter.’ Cobain killed himself a couple of years ago” (Dr. Watkins, Christian Rock: Blessing or Blasphemy?)
The Carnal Church at Corinth and Worldly Music
Although the Apostle Paul spoke of being "fools" for Christ's sake, he clearly defines what he meant ... "We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day" (1st Corinthians 4:10-13).
Clearly, Paul was indicting the carnal church of Corinth! You see, the church of Corinth had fallen into the trap of following men instead of God, and they were a very immature church (1st Corinthians 1:11-15). The church at Corinth was prospering in the world's eyes—Paul said they were wise, strong, and honorable (i.e., Paul was using irony). The truth is that they were foolish, weak, and an embarrassment. In 1st Corinthians 3:1 Paul clearly exposes the church of Corinth as being CARNAL.
Likewise, Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) artists today are prospering in the world, but are as CARNAL as can be. Christian rock is NOT Christian—it is very worldly, as are it's producers. The Apostles became as FOOLS for Christ's sake. As a result, they suffered rejection by the world, were homeless, worked menial jobs for their sustenance, were defamed, and were esteemed as the filth of the world. How do "Christian rockers" today measure up in comparison?
In 1st Corinthians 1:11-15 Paul rebukes them for following men instead of Christ. The is exactly what CCM is all about--idolizing the singers. CCM artists claim to be leading people to God, but the opposite is true. Who do you think is getting the praise of the "FANS" in the ZOEgirl concert pictures below:
"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." —James 4:4
"For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." —John 12:43
The Modern-Day (Contemporary Christian Music) INDUSTRY is controlled by Satan. There is nothing wrong with writing a new song, or for churches to write their own music; but the commercialized Christian music industry is straight from Hell. The "new" music that mimics the world is of the Devil. The Bible teaches that music should be sung in our hearts TO THE LORD, not to the fans... "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19). When you buy your favorite Christian music CD, and play it in your home or car, the singers aren't singing to the Lord, they're singing TO YOU! Ephesians 5:19 instructs us to SING TO THE LORD; but most Christians today are BEING SUNG TO. Do you think it please the Lord when you sway back-n-forth in your car to your favorite so-called Christian rock music, while God is ignored? The entire concept of admiring singers, bands, and performers is a form of IDOLATRY. Just look at the picture above. The crowd is not praising Jesus.
The term "Jesus freak" is a horrible term. The facts are irrefutable—the term "Jesus freak" originated in the rebellious hippie movement of the 1960's, and is still used by the rebellious today. You won't find any Christians who love the Lord, who go to church, who are soulwinners, who are separated from the world—who refer to themselves as "freaks." The only "freaks" we see today are the CCM crowd, and it's the wrong crowd by the way.
Please understand that I don't condemn anyone, for the Bible condemns all of us as guilty, dirty, rotten, hell-deserving sinners. My salvation solely rests in Christ's righteousness, because of the precious blood that He gave for our sins. My intention is not to be unkind; but rather, to expose the demonic nature of so-called "Christian rock" and "Christian Hip Hop" music. The issue is not about the performers personally; but rather, about the worldly music they claim to sing in Jesus' name.
Romans 12:2, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." God commands us not to be conformed to this world. The Greek word for "conformed" here is "suschematizo" and means "to fashion alike, i.e. conform to the same pattern." Is this not what religious rockers are doing? Yes, exactly so! They are fashioning themselves to the sinful world. Repackaged carnal music that is labeled as "Christian" is apostasy.
"And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible." —Isaiah 13:11
"Ye that love the LORD, hate evil..." —Psalm 97:10
