Job's Covenant With His Eyes Not To Lust
by David J. Stewart
“I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” —Job 31:1
Job was a righteous man who desired and purposed in his heart to live upright to please God. We find a wonderful passage of Scripture in the Old Testament (just one Bible verse in fact). Yet this one little nugget of truth can change a man's life forever if you'll let it. I looked up the Hebrew meaning of the word “covenant” to make sure that I understood it's accurate meaning.
At first I thought perhaps the word simply meant a promise (a vow), but I was surprised when I read the actual meaning. The word “covenant” here is the Hebrew word beriyth which means “in the sense of cutting; a compact (made by passing between pieces of flesh).” The meaning is quite interesting, as you will learn in the following Bible commentary by Albert Barnes...
Meaning Of Job 31:1 I made a covenant with mine eyes - The first virtue of his private life to which Job refers is chastity. Such was his sense of the importance of this, and of the danger to which man was exposed, that he had solemnly resolved not to think upon a young female. The phrase here, "I made a covenant with mine eyes," is poetical, meaning that he solemnly resolved. A covenant is of a sacred and binding nature; and the strength of his resolution was as great as if he had made a solemn compact. A covenant or compact was usually made by slaying an animal in sacrifice, and the compact was ratified over the animal that was slain, by a kind of imprecation that if the compact was violated the same destruction might fall on the violators which fell on the head of the victim. This idea of cutting up a victim on occasion of making a covenant, is retained in most languages. So the Greek ὅρκια τέμνειν, πέμνἔιν σπονδάς horkia temnein, temnein spondas, and the Latin icere foedus - to strike a league, in allusion to the striking down, or slaying of an animal on the occasion. And so the Hebrew, as in the place before us, כרת ברית berı̂yth kârath - to cut a covenant, from cutting down, or cutting in pieces the victim over which the covenant was made; see this explained at length in the notes at Hebrews 9:16. By the language here, Job means that he had resolved, in the most solemn manner, that he would not allow his eyes or thoughts to endanger him by improperly contemplating a woman. Why then should I think upon a maid - Upon a virgin - על־בתולה ‛al-bethûlâh; compare Proverbs 6:25, "Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids;" see, also, the fearful and solemn declaration of the Saviour in Matthew 5:28. There is much emphasis in the expression used here by Job. He does not merely say that he had not thought in that manner, but that the thing was morally impossible that he should have done it. Any charge of that kind, or any suspicion of it, he would repel with indignation. His purpose to lead a pure life, and to keep a pure heart, had been so settled, that it was impossible that he could have offended in that respect. His purpose, also, not to think on this subject, showed the extent of the restriction imposed on himself. It was not merely his intention to lead a chaste life, and to avoid open sin, but it was to maintain a pure heart, and not to suffer the mind to become corrupted by dwelling on impure images, or indulging in unholy desires. This strongly shows Job's piety and purity of heart, and is a beautiful illustration of patriarchal religion. We may remark here, that if a man wishes to maintain purity of life, he must make just such a covenant as this with himself - one so sacred, so solemn, so firm, that he will not suffer his mind for a moment to harbor an improper thought. "The very passage of an impure thought through the mind leaves pollution behind it;" and the outbreaking crimes of life are just the result of allowing the imagination to dwell on impure images. As the eye is the great source of danger (compare Mathew 5:28; 2 Peter 2:14), there should be a solemn purpose that that should be pure, and that any sacrifice should be made rather than allow indulgence to a wanton gaze: compare Mark 9:47. No man was ever too much guarded on this subject; no one ever yet made too solemn a covenant with his eyes, and with his whole soul to be chaste. That's very interesting. In the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were very common. Job sacrificed an animal to officiate his vow to be pure and not lust upon the family maid. Job already had a wife (Job 2:9). Certainly, Job was very wealthy and could have had many wives, but he followed God's original intent of one man and one woman (Adam and Eve). Job purposed in his heart to have a pure and clean mind, which is what every Christian man needs to do. It was a very serious matter to Job (and it is to God too).
The Bible calls lust a war against men's souls. A war is serious and dangerous! 1st Peter 2:11, “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” There are many ungodly men and women in the world who sport in sexual promiscuity, lewdness, impropriety, filthy jesting, dirty jokes, reveling (drinking parties), booze, smutty magazines, and making light of morality and virtue. God will punish the world for their wickedness. Isaiah 13:11, “And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.”
Wicked people laugh, scoff and make light of abstaining from lust and lewdness. The Bible calls immoral sexual desire, “lasciviousness.” Jesus taught in Matthew 5:28 that lust is the same as adultery, which brings the judgment of God. Matthew 5:28, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Job determined that he was NOT going to lust upon his maid. That means the temptation first existed. Job had to make a decision. Was he going to lust and have a filthy mind like most men do, or was he going to please God by bringing every thought into captivity to obedience unto God.
How To Control Your Mind And Live For Jesus
The Bible teaches us how to live right in 2nd Corinthians 10:5, “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” Anytime that we have a thought enter our mind, which is high-minded and exalts itself against God and the Bible, we are supposed to cast down the thought, bringing it into captivity to obedience to Christ. This is not mere mind-control; but rather, yielding our will to the Holy Spirit of God. This is what it means to walk in the Spirit.
I found a wonderful Scripture years ago that helped me to understand the Bible. It is Galatians 5:25, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Every believer has the Holy Spirit living inside (indwelling) them (Romans 8:9). The Bible teaches that if we have God's Spirit living inside our body (and we do as Christians), then we ought also to walk in the Spirit by obeying the Word of God. We do this by doing exactly as 2nd Corinthians 10:5 teaches, that is, by bringing every thought into captivity, unto obedience to the Lord.
For example: When a woman is dressed seductively and the image of her body enters into our mind, the sinful flesh wants to think about her and lust. What we need to do is immediately arrest that thought and say something like, “No, I refuse to think that way. I want to please God with my life. She's not dressed properly and ought to be ashamed of herself. She's probably not a Christian. She definitely doesn't care about morality. The Devil is using her to hurt people. I will not look again. 1st Peter 2:11 says lust wars against the soul. Lord, help me to think pure and right. I want to think right, live right and do right. Thank you Lord for dying for my sins so I can be right with you. All my sins are forgive in you Lord. I don't want to return evil for good. You paid for my sins. You deserve so much better. I want to please you Lord Jesus. I refuse to have a garbage pail for a mind. Help me Lord to be the man and Christian that you desire for me to be.”
That's how I Biblically deal with lust (and you should too). That's how O Biblically deal with hate or any other high-minded thought that exalts itself against the Scriptures and God. Literally, God wants us to allow His Words to guide our thinking. This is why David said in Psalm 1:2, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” David pondered over the Word of God day and night, loving the Bible.
Here are numerous Scriptures showing just how much David greatly loved the Bible...
Psalms 119:16, “I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.”
Psalms 119:24, “Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.”
Psalms 119:35, “Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.”
Psalms 119:47, “And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.”
Psalms 119:70, “Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law.”
Psalms 119:77, “Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.”
Psalms 119:92, “Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.”
Psalms 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalms 119:130, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Psalms 119:143, “Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.”Isn't that awesome! I delight in God's Word, even as did king David. Notice with me if you will Psalm 119:92 again...
Psalms 119:92, “Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.”
David said he wouldn't have made it, if it weren't for God's Words. I love that. In my oft health afflictions and emotional loneliness and heartaches, I would not have made it this far without the light of the Scriptures. In His law do I delight.
The man or woman who desires to live upright in Christ Jesus needs to abide in the Scriptures. If the Bible is not exciting to you, then you either lack the faith that God will do as He has promised, or else you are ignorant of the promises of God. When I consider the awesome promises that God has made to me as His child, I get happy and excited. Philippians 3:21 promises me a new body fashioned like unto the Lords, which I will receive at the Rapture.
Philippians 3:21, “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”
What a day that will be when the Lord returns and makes good on all His promises. Jesus is precious!
Pray That Ye Enter Not Into Temptation
Luke 22:40, “And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.”
Jesus told His disciples to pray that they enter not into temptation.
Notice in the Lord's Prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray for deliverance from EVIL...
Luke 11:4, “And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”
Jesus didn't say SIN. He said EVIL. The reason is because no one can escape sin, but we can all escape evil with God's help. Everyone sins. Although we can choose not to sin at any given time, we will still sin every day because we are sinners. However, we can be delivered from evil every time. No one has to commit evil. Evil is premeditated sin. No one can avoid committing sin, but we can all avoid committing evil.
We may not be able to prevent getting upset, but we can avoid planning to murder someone. Snapping in anger is a sin, but planning to murder our enemies is evil. Abortion is evil, because it is premeditated murder. Drinking alcohol with intention to get drunk is evil. The Bible tells us to pray daily and ask God to deliver us from evil. I tell God in prayer that I want to think right, do right and live right. Amen! Thankfully because the Lord died for my sins I can be right, and am right by faith in the blood that He shed for my sins (1st Peter 1:18-19).
Sexual Immorality Brings The Judgment Of God
The Bible teaches that sexual immorality, even filthy jesting and dirty talk, brings the judgments of God. Late Night television has always been popular because of their filthy jesting, dirty-mindedness and whorish guests. The Bible condemns all lewdness, lusciousness, lust and uncleanness (moral impurity)...
Colossians 3:5-6, “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.”
The word “mortify” is the Greek word nekroo and means “to deaden, subdue” the flesh. We must have the spiritual mindset that we are going to live for God, denying the lusts of the flesh. Nude (adult) beaches have security guards which escort aroused men off the beach. This proves that men can control their mental process if they so choose to do so. In fact, a man can be around naked beautiful women and not become aroused at all, if he refuses in his mind to dwell upon an immodest woman. Lust is a choice! No man lusts because he can't help it. But you say, “I can't help it, I'm over-sexed!” No, you're under-charactered! Young men aren't taught self-control these days. Instead they are taught by perverted Walt Disney television shows to “score!”
Anyone can live right in 2012!!! God wouldn't command us to do something if it were not possible. I am going to be a bit frank here, telling you something that you likely will never hear anywhere else. The most unhealthy thing a man can do is to have sex every day in his marriage. It is unhealthy. The common thought is that if a wife doesn't give her husband sex every day that he may want to go get it somewhere else. In fact, the opposite is true. The more sex that a man gets, the more he wants. The more food you eat, the more your body wants. The more you spend, the more you spend. It is wise to do everything in moderation.
A wife Biblically should never deny her husband a request for intimacy. Yet, a husband who loves his wife will exhibit restraint and respect his wife's requests. 1st Corinthians 7:4, “The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.” A wife should take care of her body for her husband, and a husband should take care of his body for his wife. They belong to each other.
Children Should Be Taught The Sacredness Of The Human Body
Women are not commodities as American society has made them. America's perverse society has lowered the sanctity of marriage and the human body. Women have become sex-objects instead of the handiwork of a loving Creator. Young boys ought to be taught the value and sacredness of the woman's body. It's not a coincidence that physical violence has increased along with the sexual perverseness of our society. Abortion has decreased the value of life in many people's minds.
Children should be taught the sacredness of the human body. They should be taught to respect the body, to properly clothe the body, and to nourish the body. The entire idea of placing tattoos upon the body is sinful, desecrating the body with worldly marks. Piercing the lips, tongue, nose, eyelids and even genitals is of the Devil. The human body is the temple of God's Holy Spirit if you are saved (1st Corinthians 3:16-17). God desires for all people to get saved. If you don't get saved, then you cannot go to Heaven (John 3:5; Romans 8:9).
Young people today are not taught about courtship these days. Instead they're taught about the biology of sex in public schools, and then are given free condoms to commit fornication. Teachers are prohibited by law from quoting the Words of God. They can show Harry Potter's witchcraft and teach New Age false doctrine, but the Bible is banned. Young people ought to be taught fidelity, courtship and to abstain from sex until they are married. That is not just the old-fashioned way, that is the right way! Marriage is God's way. Many men are terrified to marry today in lieu of America's unfair, feminist and malicious court system. Albeit, marriage is still God's way. The system literally discourages people from getting married, which I believe is deliberate, part of the Communist subversion of our nation.
Children and teens should be taught the sacredness of the human body. They ought to be taught to respect the body and never to contaminate it with cigarettes, booze nor drug abuse. You people ought to be taught to wait until they get married before having sex. It is ridiculous and sinful that Walt Disney and Hollywood are turning grade-school girls into glamour-girl whores (high-heels, lip-gloss, garters, stockings and professional hair-dos). Everything about the 1996 JonBenét Ramsey case was creepy. The parents of that little girl turned her into a glamour-girl whore at age 6. It is heathendom! Dance Moms is doing the same evil thing, causing lasciviousness in society, bringing the judgment of God upon this perverse nation. Shame on those foolish parents for desecrating the sacredness of the human body. Children should be taught the value of modesty, health and mental soundness. Instead they are taught that the road to success is based upon competition, beauty and talent. That is the heathen way of the unsaved world.
Wisdom, Self-Control And Respect In Marriage
Colossians 3:19, “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.” Husbands often become bitter against their wife for numerous reasons. The Bible makes a blanket statement and commands husbands FOR ALL REASONS not to become embittered against their wife. Ephesians 4:32, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” We read in Romans 12:16, “Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.” A Godly husband should be of the same mind as his wife, humble as the Bible teaches, and the wife likewise ought to humble herself before her husband, cooperating and working together in the fear of the Lord. The Bible says, Proverb 13:10, “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” Only by sinful pride does any person file for divorce (Matthew 19:8).
Like anything else, harmony is found in moderation. Excess of anything can lead to addiction. People can become addicted to just about anything (gambling, work, lying, stealing, sex, alcohol, drugs, food, chewing nails, et cetera). Some addictions are chemical, others biological, some psychological, and so forth. A man who has to have sex every day is a walking spiritual time-bomb. The Bible teaches self-control. 1st Corinthians 9:27, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” It is my humble opinion that a husband and wife should abstain from having sex every day. Hebrews 13:4 says marriage is honourable in all and the bed undefiled. Thus, it is not wrong Scripturally to have sex every day, but it is not wise nor healthy. This is good, practical advice that you likely won't hear at church. I am being your friend.
I love the following Bible verses...
Romans 8:5-9, “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
The Bible plainly teaches that no person can please God in the flesh. That's why Jesus said, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:5). The carnal mind is hostile against God. That's what “enmity” means. The world is God's enemy (James 4:4). Jesus said that the world hated Him and will also hate us as faithful Christians (John 15:19). The servant is not greater than his Master.
The news lately has been saturated with sexual crimes. This is to be expected in a perverse society where greedy TV executives exploit underaged teen girls for profit and get away with it. Those people ought to be taken to court, tried and convicted, and then imprisoned for deliberate intent to corrupting society morally. Truly Satan comes only to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). American culture has stooped lower than low over the past 25 years. Furthermore, television has led the ruin of American society, causing lasciviousness and lust in our homes. Just because everybody's doing it doesn't make it moral nor right. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, upon the evil and the good. Proverb 15:3, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.”
America Needs More Voices!
America could be saved if we had more men like John the Baptist and Billy Sunday, men who preached uncompromisingly against sin. It's bad enough that America lacks true men of God who preach against sin—it's much worse that professed Christians all across America are embracing witchcraft, homosexuality, abortion. Here's a church that even participated in a PRO-abortion march. Christianity Today is Pro-homosexual.
This is the apostate condition of America today, and it is repulsive. America needs voices! The Bible says that there was a “voice” (singular) crying in the wilderness. In these times of increasing apostasy, it is becoming necessary for Bible-believing Christians to STAND ALONE, just as did John the Baptist. It eventually cost John his life for preaching against Herod's adultery. Truth has few friends these days.
